While birding at mud Creek Marsh near Pembroke we encountered a family of common gallinules. The chicks and the other adult quickly scurried into the cattails but this one remained on guard squawking and ruffling his feathers. At a distance these birds may look very plain but up close they're beautiful...and always comical!
